2020 Hyundai Sonata vs Kia Optima

A well-rounded midsize sedan should be able to deliver an efficient and fun drive while still offering plenty of space for your family and cargo. Sedans like the 2020 Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima feature both along with lots of useful technology, but which one is right for you?
To help drivers in Bloomington, Martinsville, and Ellettsville, IN, decide, Andy Mohr Hyundai put together this comparison.
2020 Hyundai Sonata vs Kia Optima Performance
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata and 2020 Kia Optima each offer an exciting lineup of fun and efficient engines. The base motor in the Sonata is a bit peppier than its opponent, generating 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the Optima falls short with 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque.
With its standard powertrain under the hood, the Sonata can get up to an EPA-estimated 28 city/38 highway MPG.[1] Expect more gas station stops in the Optima since its base motor only achieves an EPA-estimated 25 city/35 highway MPG.
Sonata vs. Optima: Interior Dimensions
Each one of these sedans sports a roomy interior with two rows of seats and space for up to five people. The 2020 Hyundai Sonata interior is the larger of the two, though, which leaves the 2020 Kia Optima coming up a bit short in space to stretch out and store your cargo.
Hyundai Sonata:
- Headroom (front/rear): 40.4/38.4 inches
- Legroom (front/rear): 46.1/34.8 inches
- Cargo Room: 16.0 cubic feet
Kia Optima:
- Headroom (front/rear): 39.8/37.8 inches
- Legroom (front/rear): 45.5/35.6 inches
- Cargo Room: 15.9 cubic feet
As you can see, while these sedans, each offer over 104 cubic feet of interior passenger space, the Sonata is less cramped for the driver in terms of headroom and legroom, creating more relaxing commutes.
To make the most of your cargo space, the Sonata and Optima feature 60/40 split folding rear seats, so you can quickly access the trunk or make some extra space if you’re carrying longer cargo, such as beach supplies or golf clubs.
2020 Hyundai Sonata vs 2020 Kia Optima: Tech
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata and 2020 Kia Optima each offer an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system to help create more exciting and enjoyable drives. This high-resolution display puts all your music and maps conveniently in the center of your dashboard and includes features like:
- Bluetooth® compatibility
- Apple CarPlay®
- Android Auto™
- Navigation system
You’ll find more music and superior sound quality inside the Sonata, though, thanks to an available Bose® 12-speaker system. Unfortunately, the Optima maxes out at 10 speakers. Additionally, a 10.25-inch display is available in the Sonata for greater visibility and usability on the ever-changing highway. The Optima doesn’t quite measure up with only an 8-inch screen available.
