About Hyundai Safety Ratings

Hyundai Sonata Safety Ratings Bloomington IN

Safety ratings are given by two main organizations:

  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
  • Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

The NHTSA performs tests in the areas of Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover. Then, they award vehicles with a rating out of five on each of these tests. Vehicles that perform well in all three areas get a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating.

The IIHS tests the vehicle’s crash worthiness through five different tests, including the roof strength and head restraints. They also test headlights and child seat anchors, as well as available safety technology features that improve collision mitigation efforts.

The models that receive the highest marks in IIHS tests are awarded a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Safety Rating: NHTSA

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata has earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA ensuring that you’ll be secure in the event of a collision.

This Sonata safety rating includes a 5-star rollover rating, which means this sedan is highly resistant to the risk of rollover in a single-vehicle loss-of-control scenario. It also received five stars for the driver and rear passenger side barrier, which simulates an intersection collision between a standing vehicle and a moving barrier at 38.5 MPH.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Safety Rating: IIHS

The IIHS named the 2021 Hyundai Sonata a 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK because it achieved a high level of excellence in crashworthiness, as well as crash avoidance and mitigation. Its side, roof strength, head restraints, and seats all received “Good” ratings, which is the highest mark you can get from the IIHS.

This Hyundai sedan’s collision mitigation technology also received superior marks for its forward collision mitigation systems like Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection. This system alerts you to pedestrians or other vehicles ahead and can even apply automatic emergency braking, if necessary, to help avoid a collision.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Standard Safety Technologies

Let’s talk a little bit about those collision mitigation features. The 2021 Sonata comes standard with several safety technologies as part of the SmartSense advanced safety suite.

These standard active safety features include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection (FCA-Ped).
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Lane Following Assist (LFA).
  • High Beam Assist (HBA).
  • Rear Occupant Alert (ROA).
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go.

It also comes standard with Driver Attention Warning (DAW). This systems monitors for drowsy or distracted driving patterns. If either of these scenarios are detected, this system will issue a warning. Take this alert as a reminder to watch the road, drive more carefully, or maybe even take a quick break.

Driver-Assisting Features that Keep You Safe

In addition to the standard safety tech, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata offers available driver-assisting features that can help promote safe driving, such as:

  • Highway Drive Assist (HDA).
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA).
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA).

Highway Drive Assist (HDA) is an especially useful tool for anyone who commutes long distances on the highway. This system uses Lane Following Assist (LFA) and Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop& Go technologies to provide gentle steering assistance if you inadvertently cross into another lane while driving.

It also allows you to set a speed and following distance from the other vehicles ahead of you. This system will then automatically adjust your speed to maintain that distance if you approach slow-moving cars on the highway.

Smart Parking Features & Your Sonata

Of course, we can’t talk about Hyundai Sonata safety features without talking about the available smart parking systems, like:

  • Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA-R).
  • Rear View Monitor with parking guidance.
  • Surround View Monitor.
  • Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA).

The standard Rear View Monitor and available Surround View Monitor help you park with ease by turning your infotainment touchscreen display into a live video feed of the area directly behind or around your vehicle.

Then, there’s the available Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA). This acts like your own valet parking attendant. Simply align your vehicle with the spot you want and use your key fob to move your car back into the space. Then, pull it forward when you’re ready to leave so that it’s easy to exit the parking lot.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Design & Airbags

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata was designed around safety, and as such, it has been built with both front and rear crumple zones to absorb collisions better. This feature allows the vehicle to divert force away from you and your passengers and further into the body of the car.

That kind of design translates into the interior, too, with an energy-absorbing steering column and a smart system of airbags. This design will further help cushion you from any force, so you’re always kept secure.

In the front seats, there are advanced dual front airbags with the Occupant Classification System (OCS), driver and front passenger side-impact airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag. Passengers in the back get protection from side air curtain airbags that will help keep them secure during a side collision.
