2022 Hyundai Elantra vs Toyota Corolla

If you are in the market for a compact sedan for your travels around Bloomington, Martinsville, and Ellettsville, Indiana, research is necessary. During this process, you’ll narrow your options, ensuring that you find the vehicle with the interior space and performance you desire. Chances are your research has brought you to two popular sedans: the 2022 Hyundai Elantra and the 2022 Toyota Corolla. You may notice that both models offer a lot of high-end features and give drivers the fuel economy they need. Which one shines a little brighter, though?

We can help you answer that question with this vehicle comparison. We’ll put the Elantra and Corolla side-by-side and compare several facets to help you make the best decision. At Andy Mohr Hyundai, we pride ourselves on giving our customers the information they need, and this guide to the key attributes of the 2022 Hyundai Elantra vs. Toyota Corolla is one way we do that.

2022 Elantra vs 2022 Corolla: Engine & MPG Specs

Although you may be searching for a compact car, you still want it to have a lot of personality on the roads. Thankfully, both vehicles offer enough power to handle any traffic situation in your path.

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra comes standard with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. This is great for seamlessly cruising the city streets as well as easily transitioning to higher speeds on the open road.

In comparison, the Toyota Corolla gives drivers a standard 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. However, it only offers 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque, so you may not achieve the power and performance you desire in your next sedan.

Knowing your vehicle comes packed with the power you need will certainly give you a lively experience while you’re in the driver’s seat. However, you also want to know you won’t be running to the gas station often.

In this regard, the Elantra offers an EPA-estimated 33 city and 43 highway MPG.1 This helps you stay on the road for longer, skipping those pesky trips to the gas station.

Comparably, the base trim of the Corolla comes up a little short. When equipped with its standard engine, the Corolla only achieves an EPA-estimated 30 city and 38 highway MPG, so you can expect to make more fuel stops in this automobile.

2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Toyota Corolla: Interior Dimensions

The efficiency of these sedans will have you spending long stretches behind the wheel. Therefore, it’s important to look at their interior dimensions to see which one will provide a more comfortable and spacious ride.

Drivers and passengers can spread out in the 2022 Hyundai Elantra’s interior with a total of 99.4 cubic feet of passenger volume. This allows seating for up to five with ample wiggle room no matter where you’re seated in the sedan.

On the other hand, you may find that it gets a little cramped in the Toyota Corolla. While it also offers a seating capacity of five, it only offers 88.6 cubic feet of passenger room. This means your passengers may not have the room they want to get cozy on long trips.

These spacious cabins break down into the following interior measurements:

2022 Hyundai Elantra

2022 Toyota Corolla

Headroom (front/rear)

40.6 inches/37.3 inches

38.3 inches/37.1 inches

Legroom (front/rear)

42.3 inches/38.0 inches

42.0 inches/34.8 inches

Shoulder Room (front/rear)

56.5 inches/55.6 inches

54.0 inches/51.7 inches

The Elantra is much roomier when it comes to front headroom, making it the ideal sedan for all drivers. Your rear passengers will also thank you for the extra legroom and shoulder room found in the Elantra, helping to create more enjoyable weekend getaways.

Additionally, with both sedans, you won’t have to worry about where you’re going to put extra belongings, such as backpacks, grocery bags, and even moving boxes. Luckily, both the 2022 Elantra and 2022 Corolla offer plenty of trunk space for all your needs.

The Elantra gives drivers 14.2 cubic feet of cargo space to store away items with ease without sacrificing seating space inside. However, you might have difficulty fitting bulky purchases in the Corolla, as it only has 13.1 cubic feet of cargo room.

Elantra vs Corolla: Interior Features & Technologies

Along with ample room inside your sedan, the Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla also make driving comfortable and connected with a long list of cabin features.

Both models boast the following similar features that you can enjoy on any adventure:

  • Standard 6-way manual-adjustable driver’s seat and 4-way front passenger seat
  • Available premium sound systems from top brands
  • Standard 4.2-inch digital instrument clusters
  • Available ambient interior lighting
Each is also equipped with intuitive multimedia systems that keep you in touch and entertained while on the move. In the Toyota Corolla, you’ll receive a standard 7-inch touchscreen that boasts Bluetooth® technologies as well as Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration. You can also upgrade this system to an 8-inch touchscreen for easier access.
However, the Hyundai Elantra comes out on top again with its array of technologies inside the cabin. Its standard infotainment system comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen and Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, eliminating the need for cords to stay connected. Plus, HD Radio™ also comes standard.
Want to upgrade? You can with the available 10.25-inch touchscreen, a new feature that will have you multitasking easier. There’s also a slew of available interior amenities you won’t find on the Corolla, like:
  • Leather-trimmed seats
  • 10.25-inch fully digital gauge cluster
  • Dual fully automatic temperature control

Hyundai vs Toyota: Safety Features & Driver-Assistive Technologies

Nothing is more important than ensuring you explore the road safely. Therefore, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra and 2022 Toyota Corolla come with a standard suite of driver-assistive technologies.

In the Elantra sedan, you’ll find Hyundai SmartSense, a package of safety features that utilize modern technologies to keep you on track, elevate your awareness, and even step in to help prevent possible collisions. This suite includes the following standard systems:

  • Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist with Pedestrian Detection
  • High Beam Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist & Lane Following Assist
As matters would have it, the Toyota Corolla with its Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 includes all these features, or similar ones, as well. However, there are some standard systems in the 2022 Elantra that are not standard in the Corolla or aren’t available at all. Let’s look:
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist: When your Elantra detects a vehicle in your pesky blind spot, it will let you know. It can also apply the brakes before you change lanes, so you drive smoothly and safely. This feature is only available in the Corolla.
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist: Whether you’re backing out of your driveway or parking space, this system will notify you if anyone is approaching from the left or right. If you can’t respond in time, it can apply the brakes to avoid an accident. This feature is also not available standardly for the Toyota sedan.
  • Driver Attention Warning: This system will monitor your driving patterns as you hit the road. Then, if it senses something is out of the norm, you’ll hear a warning sound that will let you know it’s time to take a break to avoid drowsy driving. This feature isn’t available on the Toyota Corolla at all.
  • Safe Exit Warning: Another feature not available for the 2022 Corolla is the Safe Exit Warning. This system can help prevent damage to vehicle doors by letting you know not to open your door if another vehicle is approaching. This is especially handy if you have little ones!

That’s not all, either. Available driving aids that further assist with cyclist and junction detection as well as parking assists are also found on the Hyundai Elantra and not the Corolla. Without these features on the Toyota model, you may not have as much peace of mind when exploring what the open road has to offer.
