PERFORMANCE
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Round one! This round is all about performance and fuel efficiency. Both models have trained for this moment, showing up ready to sink their claws into the asphalt and take the long way home.

Sting Like a Bee

When you look under the hood of these hybrid sedans, you’ll find many similarities. The Hyundai’s hybrid powertrain produces a combined 139 horsepower, and the Toyota is right on its heels with 138 horsepower. Plus, both models come standard with Front Wheel Drive. It’s looking like an even fight so far!

To win this matchup, one of these sedans needs to be able to shift on the fly and pack a punch during that final blow. The Drive Mode Select systems on either model will help you do this; however, the Hyundai’s unique Sport mode will give you an extra power boost that can’t be replicated by the Toyota.

Float Like a Butterfly

These hybrids bob and weave around each other in the power department. How do they fare with longevity? As hybrids, the Hyundai and the Toyota can go for miles without stopping to refuel, but which one can go farther?

  • Hyundai Elantra Hybrid achieves an EPA-estimated 53 city/56 highway MPG rating*
  • Toyota Corolla Hybrid achieves an EPA-estimated 53 city/46 highway MPG rating

After a closer review, the Elantra Hybrid delivers the final blow in this round. Although their city MPG ratings are identical, the Hyundai is capable of 10 more highway miles, allowing you to fly by rest stops.

INTERIOR
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Round two! For this round, we’re discussing space and convenience. When parked side by side, these hybrid sedans look similar; however, you never judge a book by its cover. It’s inside that counts. Allow us to show you what we found when we took out the measuring tape and let these models duke it out.

Get in the Ring

If you’re looking for a model that prioritizes everyone on board, choose the Elantra Hybrid. This model displays 99.4 cubic feet of space dedicated to your passengers. The Corolla Hybrid falls behind in the count with 88.6 cubic feet. Here’s what those figures look like across their two rows of seating:

Hyundai Elantra Hybrid
Toyota Corolla Hybrid
Headroom (front/rear) 40.6/37.3 inches 38.3/37.1 inches
Legroom (front/rear) 42.3/38 inches 42/34.8 inches
Shoulder Room (front/rear) 56.5/55.6 inches 54/51.7 inches

In this round, the Toyota dances around the Hyundai with similar dimensions. However, the Elantra Hybrid delivers the knockout with its larger front headroom, rear legroom, and all-over shoulder room dimensions.

The Cargo Compartment

Both sedans provide large trunks for those times when you need to transport cargo rather than your family. However, the Elantra Hybrid’s trunk measures 14.2 cubic feet, whereas the Corolla Hybrid’s trunk offers 13.1 cubic feet. The difference is slight; however, that little bit of extra room lets you leave Tetris on the big screen.

The Hyundai is just getting started. Its knockout of this round comes as the standard hands-free smart trunk release! When your hands are full, you can still pop open the trunk. The Toyota has a trunk release function on its key fob, meaning you’ll need to dig around in your purse or pocket just to open the hatch.

SAFETY
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Round three! This may be the last round, but it covers a pivotal vehicle feature: driver assistance. Both Hyundai and Toyota equip their vehicle lineups with standard safety suites that boost your confidence on any road. Which suite goes a few steps further to protect you?

Accident Prevention Guaranteed

Hyundai SmartSense and Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 are the standard safety suites on the Elantra Hybrid and the Corolla Hybrid. These multi-feature suites act in several ways to help prevent accidents and keep you out of harm’s way. You’ll even find a few similar features in either suite:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • High Beam Assist

You’ll also find Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist on either hybrid; however, they come standard on the Hyundai and are available on the Toyota.

Protection From Point A to Point B

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid’s standard safety suite is impressive; however, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid’s suite comes with even more standard features, including:

  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Safe Exit Warning
  • Lane Following Assist

The Toyota goes without similar features that would help protect you at every leg of your journey.

And the Winner Is…
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Ding ding ding! The fight is over, and we’re ready to crown the winner. Before we do, we must congratulate both sedans for their efficiency, interior space, and safety. Although they share many similarities, we believe the 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid earned additional points for its MPG rating, larger dimensions, and additional driver assistance.
