Round one! This round is all about performance and fuel efficiency. Both models have trained for this moment, showing up ready to sink their claws into the asphalt and take the long way home.
When you look under the hood of these hybrid sedans, you’ll find many similarities. The Hyundai’s hybrid powertrain produces a combined 139 horsepower, and the Toyota is right on its heels with 138 horsepower. Plus, both models come standard with Front Wheel Drive. It’s looking like an even fight so far!
To win this matchup, one of these sedans needs to be able to shift on the fly and pack a punch during that final blow. The Drive Mode Select systems on either model will help you do this; however, the Hyundai’s unique Sport mode will give you an extra power boost that can’t be replicated by the Toyota.

After a closer review, the Elantra Hybrid delivers the final blow in this round. Although their city MPG ratings are identical, the Hyundai is capable of 10 more highway miles, allowing you to fly by rest stops.
Round two! For this round, we’re discussing space and convenience. When parked side by side, these hybrid sedans look similar; however, you never judge a book by its cover. It’s inside that counts. Allow us to show you what we found when we took out the measuring tape and let these models duke it out.
If you’re looking for a model that prioritizes everyone on board, choose the Elantra Hybrid. This model displays 99.4 cubic feet of space dedicated to your passengers. The Corolla Hybrid falls behind in the count with 88.6 cubic feet. Here’s what those figures look like across their two rows of seating:

In this round, the Toyota dances around the Hyundai with similar dimensions. However, the Elantra Hybrid delivers the knockout with its larger front headroom, rear legroom, and all-over shoulder room dimensions.
Both sedans provide large trunks for those times when you need to transport cargo rather than your family. However, the Elantra Hybrid’s trunk measures 14.2 cubic feet, whereas the Corolla Hybrid’s trunk offers 13.1 cubic feet. The difference is slight; however, that little bit of extra room lets you leave Tetris on the big screen.
